Countess Grace Hall Von Sharone is rich, one of the elite. She‘s also a very unhappy lady who has a mask that few see through. Her marriage is on the rocks, the powers that be in the Hall Foundation make her feel like she's on shaky ground as President and CEO. And now her best friends are being murdered. John Smith is a security specialist who detests many of the rich people who turn to him for help. When they're not afraid, they seem to look down their aristocratic noses at him. Their attraction to one another seems contrary to the feelings either are comfortable with. Still, John's job is to protect her even if means he may have to change his usual way of thinking.

J. R. Ward is as good as any who are writing romantic suspense today. No matter what name she writes under!! The relationships and personalities are deep, human, and complex but she makes them easy to understand. Hard for most readers to empathize with the problems of the rich but, except for her wealth, Grace hasn't had that great a life. Even the parts she thought were good come under question as the tale develops.

Grace and John are great characters who seem to complement each other in unique ways. Secondary players, like John's cadre of security specialists, add a touch of humor just when we need it the most. The bad guy could be one of several people it's easy to dislike as we get to know them or it could be anyone. Ms. Ward shines as she keeps us guessing the way a great suspense should.
