Fiona MacPhee and Joan Armstrong are trying to prevent the end of the world. The researcher and her friend the demon slayer are on the track of a vampire who is trying to liberate a being called Andromache, which will bring about the end of things. They are trying to get in touch with a Deacon who has access to old document which will enable them to counteract whatever the demon is doing and they seem to have acquired a vampire sidekick in Rory MacLaren. Hopefully the four of them will be able to defeat the vampire Miklos in time.

This is a very exciting and fast moving vampire story, only marred by the excessive use of colloquialisms that readers outside of Scotland will have difficulty understanding. I would add half a heart for a glossary. The characters are very vivid as is the author’s description of Edinburgh both above and below ground. Joan is a very brash demon slayer and she learns a lot during the story. Fiona is hiding quite a bit and it is fun to watch her trying not to fall in love with Rory. She is by far my favorite character in the story and her history is interesting and sad. Rory is a rare thing, a funny and romantic vampire. His conflicted loyalties and love for Fiona make him very appealing. I would have liked to see more of Euen; he has the even temper and common sense that Joan lacks. This is a team that I would love to see more of.
