Jameson McEwan, known as Jamie or Widow McEwan, had worked harder than most to insure that her ranch would prosper. Her father had encouraged her to marry Sid McEwan, an abusive husband who died where he frequented—the whorehouse. Jamie never wanted to have sex or marry again. And then, Sid’s best friend and partner, another older man with a beer gut, bad breathe, and chauvinistic views about women, tried to force her to marry him and combine their ranches.

Jack and his lifelong friend, Seth Conner, owned a nearby ranch known as The Double C. Contrary to the situation at Jamie’s place, Seth and Jack had no trouble with stolen or dead animals. Both men were concerned when Jamie decided to go to San Antonio on business alone. Seth talked her into allowing him to accompany her. He had plans—he had loved Jamie, five years his senior, since she was still married to Sid. Once he found out that Tucker Portman was trying to court her, Seth decided that he had to act now or lose her completely.

Ms. Schroeder has again presented us with a quick paced, solid plot which proved to be captivating. Her characters were graphic and believable. Her main characters were so loving, and the sensual scenes so mesmerizing, that I could not put this book down. The book is a great way to spend an afternoon and the ending, as well as the target, will shock you. Great book!
