The English have taken everything from Colm Devaney, his home, his land, his family. Lord Andrew Hugh Ryewich even took his mother with Colm the result of his rape. Now in America living in the poverty many immigrants experience in nineteenth century New York City he's determined to use his strength to take back his pride by beating his father's fighter. If he wins maybe he'll be able to get out of the crowded city with the woman he loves and build a new life. He has big dreams but it will take a lot of hard work and some help to win them.

Marissa Alwin has built an excellent story of situations experienced by many after they were driven out of Ireland to settle in the USA. This is a little reminiscent of the Tom Cruise movie Far and Away but the story is much more compact and well done. Colm is a man willing to do whatever he can to honestly and honorably to rebuild his life away from the city with the woman he loves. Poverty and her father's refusal to let him court her because of his mixed heritage hinder him. Even a wealthy Lady Abbott can't convince him to go against his honor.

Bess wants Colm but almost loses him when she makes a deal with the local villain Thomas O'Boyle. Luckily the author gives us Lady Pembroke who wants to get back at her brother Lord Andrew. She's a convincingly done. Her plan is a broad one that can kill two birds with one stone if luck is with them.

Ms. Alwin has done a great job with the storyline, characters, setting, dialogue and eroticism. All of it together makes this a great story to read.
