SS: Although each book is written to stand alone, my sinister plan is to lure readers into the universe and get them hooked. Here's the blurb for The Temptation, book 4 in the Forbidden series.

HH: This is part of your fabulous Forbidden series. Where did the idea for the series itself come from? SS: The Forbidden series, which I've been working on for the past couple years, was conceived during a flight back from London. I'd ended up having to extend my stay there because I'd fallen terribly ill. I'd thought at the time that it was food poisoning or a horrible flu. I was still in a very bad way during the flight home. I slept on and off. I was in the middle row on the plane and there were a bunch of seats across so I could stretch out. There was only one other passenger sharing the row with me and he was busy watching gay porn on his portable DVD player. Orlando Bloom was on the cover of the American Way magazine and I started thinking that he'd make a great mild-mannered vampire. Between naps I jotted down notes. By the time I landed in San Diego I had the series laid out. It turned out I didn't have food poisoning. I was severely anemic and ended up in the hospital for blood transfusions. Did my anemia inspire my vampire series? Hmmmm.
HH: What can you tell us about the other books in the series? SS: Each book features a different hero/heroine pairing and is told from the perspective of the male protagonist in first person point of view. This gives the reader an up-close and very personal experience of the hero. From the first book you're immersed in the supernatural world of the Forbidden.

In Book 1, The Sacrifice, psychiatrist Wesley Atherton realizes there's a fine line between madness and mysticism. When he's pitted in a battle against the Grim Reaper and Kate, the woman he loves, is threatened, Wes will do anything, make any sacrifice, to save her. The reader, along with the hero/heroine, discover this hidden, paranormal culture and a group of characters that will appear in subsequent installments.
WARNING: This book contains one fabulously feisty redheaded heroine, one hunky holy-man-turned-rebel vampire, a group of corrupt religious zealots, women in chains and plenty of scorching hot sex.
Book 2, The Ascension, takes place five years later and introduces us to vampire Byron Renfield. Byron's struggle is almost the polar opposite of Wesley's. As one of the most elite and powerful vampires, he's lived a life very separate from humans. He finds himself enticed to give up his way of life, his entire belief system, when he falls in love with and impulsively claims Violet, a human. The union between Byron and Violet sets off a chain of events, triggering a revolution that will change the world.
WARNING: This book contains spectacular magical ass-kickings, copious amounts of blistering sex, one super-sexy, gun-toting heroine, and a very delicious, very powerful sorcerer... who sometimes sports fangs.
Book 3, The Revolution, is set twenty-five years after The Ascension and features Dell Renfield, the son of Byron and Violet. Dell is not only a vampire, he's a master mage and a member of the Preternatural Special Forces (the PSF), a group of supernaturals who work for the government. In The Revolution Dell is sent on a secret mission with an irresistible human partner, Alexandria (Alex) Sanchez. There are glimpses of characters from prior novels and some new ones are introduced. We get to see what Byron has been able to accomplish in terms of his goal to mainstream the monsters into society and we see Dell's struggle to balance supporting his father's vision, living his own dream, and fulfilling his greater destiny.
HH: How does The Temptation continue it? SS: There's a scene in The Revolution where you're introduced to a hunky werewolf from Texas named Jake. As soon as I wrote the scene I knew that he needed his own book. The Temptation occurs just a matter of months after The Revolution. Dell Renfield makes an appearance and there are references to Byron and Wesley. The universe broadens and we discover that a very powerful and reliable seer believes Jake has an important role to play in something that's to come. More immediately, Jake has to save college professor Allison Connelly when she falls into an icy ravine AND protect his pack from a maniacal rogue Were turned serial killer.
HH: What do you like best about Jacob and why might he be perfect for Allison? SS: I love his irreverence and his passion. He's in his early twenties. Most men that age find themselves struggling to discover who they are. Having recently been turned into a werewolf, Jake's struggles are magnified astronomically. But he holds himself together because at the very core of his being he's strong and steady-a good man with a good heart.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? SS: On May 11th Samhain will be publishing Shelter From the Storm, a contemporary romance that's near and dear to my heart. Mac Moore, the hero, is a social worker who works with abused children. There are no vampires or werewolves, but like so many real women Jennifer, the heroine, has past demons she needs to shake before she can open herself up to the possibility of love. Here's the blurb:

HH: You left a day job back in 2007 to pursue a career writing and working in the industry. Any regrets? SS: Not a one. I absolutely love what I do everyday. As the owner of two bookstores, I get to surround myself with books, authors, and other industry professionals. What's not to love? We have staff who keep things running smoothly on a day-to-day basis so I am able to balance my work, writing, and other duties... like transporting my son to track practice and helping him with his algebra homework.
HH: What accomplishment in your career to this point are you most proud of? SS: In my writing career that would be being offered Professional Guest status at Dragon*Con this year. I'll be appearing on panels and participating in signings. Those spots are quite coveted, so I feel very honored. Dragon*Con is the largest speculative fiction convention in the U.S. and occurs every year in Atlanta over Labor Day weekend. It's one fabulously huge party - I can't wait.
HH: What are you reading these days? SS: The last three books I read were Love Bite by Lynsay Sands, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, and Dawnkeepers by Jessica Andersen. Next in my TBR is Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr.
HH: Any exciting plans for spring or summer? SS: Later this month I'm going to be in Hilton Head, SC for a week with my family. In April I'll be in Columbus, OH for the Romantic Times Convention. In July I'll be attending Comic-Con in San Diego. Then I have Dragon*Con at the end of the summer. And I have a new writing project I'm going to be working on - book one in a new (not yet contracted) urban fantasy series I'm really excited about.
