An Interview with Jennifer Haymore
By Holly Hewson for The Romance StudioHH: Jennifer, thank you for talking with us at TRS. Please tell us about your featured book, A Touch of Scandal. JH: A Touch of Scandal is the story of a lively servant girl and the tortured Duke of Calton, the spurned husband from my first book, A Hint of Wicked. Out of all these books, I think this hero and heroine are the most different, but ultimately they’re probably also the most well-suited for each other. I had such a blast writing their story!
HH: A servant girl and a powerful duke. Where did you get the idea for their sizzling tale? JH: I’ve always loved Cinderella stories, and stories of people who are so different from the outside yet ultimately so perfect for each other. Garrett’s character was established in the first book, and I knew what drove him. I just had to conjure up the perfect heroine, and that was when it hit me that Kate—as different as she was—was the only woman for him!
HH: What do you like about Kate and how do you relate to her? JH: Kate is one of my favorite heroines. She’s naïve and gullible, but she’s so honest. I guess the best word for her is “real.” With Kate, what you see is what you get. I love that about her!
HH: What do you like about Garrett and why might he be perfect for Kate? JH: Garrett is somber and brooding—and for good reason. The past eight years have been extremely difficult for him. But Kate really does bring that spark back into his life.
HH: Your historicals are wonderful, among my favorites. What do you enjoy most about writing them? JH: Thank you! I have always loved history, and I especially love the romantic, wild history of England. I love everything about going there in my stories—everything from the extreme glamour to the extreme grit of the time.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers? JH: I’m really excited about my next book, A Season of Seduction (releases in October), which features Garrett’s younger sister, Lady Rebecca, and her quest for the perfect hero. Jack, the hero of A Season of Seduction, was so much fun to write!
HH: How do you balance a writing career with a family life and everything else? JH: Well, I admit, sometimes it feels impossible. I have a lot of late nights and pulling-my-hair-out moments. Somehow it all seems to come together in the end—the kids get fed and the deadlines get met.
HH: What would you most like to accomplish this year? JH: I’d like to continue to feed my kids and meet my deadlines! But really, my biggest goal is to become a better writer with every book I write.
HH: What are you reading these days? JH: I’ve finally dived in to A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the fifth book in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander Series. It’s been out a few years, but it’s an enormous book and I haven’t felt ready to tackle it until now. I am enjoying it, though. Jamie and Claire, the hero and heroine of these stories, is one of my favorite couples from literature.
HH: Any exciting plans for the summer? JH: We just bought a new house with a pool, so I’m seeing spending this summer with my laptop at poolside! I’m looking forward to that, actually, even though I’m overdue for another trip to England (just dropping another hint for my husband!).
HH: Thank you!
