Beth Williamson

Amidst the post-war chaos that rains down around them, a controlling man and a desperate woman must choose between life and love.

Book One of the Devils on Horseback series.

Available in print 11/27 from Samhain Publishing!

Nate Marchand grew up as the only son of the town drunk. As a Confederate soldier, he found that order in the chaos was the only thing that kept him sane. Numbers, information, keeping everything in its proper place became second nature. The chaos of the war and its aftermath sent him into a rigid state that he couldn't seem to overcome.

He and his friends, nicknamed Devils on Horseback, leave behind the aftermath of war to start fresh in the west. Their new business venture flounders and desperation drives them to take whatever work they can.

The Devils are hired to remove the Taggert family from land claimed by Samuel O'Shea, the largest landowner in Grayton, Texas. When he meets Elisa Taggert, his entire world shifts beneath him. Attracted, bewildered, and off-kilter, Nate ignores his conscience in favor of his wallet.

The simple task of removing a woman, a boy, and an old man, along with a small herd of cattle, resembles a Medieval siege. Nate wrestles with what he knows is right with what he must do. Will his love for Elisa overcome his need for survival?

An Interview with Beth Williamson
By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance Studio

HH: Beth, welcome back to TRS! Please tell us all about your latest release, Devils on Horseback: Nate.

BW: My new series with Samhain, Devils on Horseback, kicks off with book 1, Nate. This series is not only brand new (the Malloys are all epubbed now), but it was a departure for me in terms of writing. If you've never read my work, I tend to have some subtle, dry humor punctuated with vivid characters, emotion, action and sex. Nothing that sends you to the pits of hell with angst, but enough that readers feel along with the characters.

The Devils series is about what people can and do endure, and the consequences that result. In Nate's book, he's become what we would refer to as obsessive-compulsive. He's got to have everything in order, in its place, or he loses control. He's rigid, unbending and trapped by it. It's a hard-fought battle to maintain who he is and our heroine, Elisa, makes him hang by his fingernails in unknown territory.

While the Devils are dealing with and discovering who they are, they face adversity in each of their stories. Nate struggles with his conscience as he and his friends try to evict Elisa and her family from their land. When do you draw the line between self-sacrifice and need? He also fights the idea that he can give control over to someone else - namely Elisa.

Here is the blurb for Nate:

Amidst the post-war chaos that rains down around them, a controlling man and a desperate woman must choose between life and love.

Book One of the Devils on Horseback series.

HH: This is the first in an exciting new series from Samhain Publishing. Where did you get the idea for this series?

BW: I was at a Christmas party with my husband at a steak house. Small party - there are only about 12 folks that work at this company. So, I'm browsing the menu when I see a dish called Devils on Horseback - it's oysters in hot sauce. (We like it hot down here in the south

Kablam!

That title rang in my head until I had to write it down. Almost two years later, the first book in that series is published.

Devils on Horseback is a powerful series of stories, IMHO, with plenty of action, hot sex (of course), and a gritty, sometimes not pretty, view of the Devils' world. There's guns, blood, sex, twists and hopefully some unforgettable men you'll come to love as much as I do.

HH: What can you tell us about the next story?

BW: The next in the Devils on Horseback series is Jake. Jake's story is to be published next March ['08]. He surprised me quite a bit while I was writing-he's suffering from what we'd call post-traumatic stress disorder. The woman who captures his heart is caught in the sticky web of prejudice and deceit.

Here is the blurb:

A thief haunted by the war finds salvation in the arms of an angel.

Book 2 of the Devils on Horseback series

Most people think Jake Sheridan as an easygoing man whose problems rolled off him like water off a duck's back. That's what he wanted them to see, but there was so much beneath the surface, he daren't let it out or he was afraid he'd never get it all back in.

Growing up in a loud Irish household, Jake learned early that if you didn't make too much noise, you could get away with a lot. He learned to steal, filch, sneak, and lie his way out of any situation he found himself in. His skills came in handy during the war when he and his best friend Lee joined up to fight under his cousin, Gideon.

The Devils are hired to help rebuild the town of Tanger after it had been ransacked by marauders. Everywhere they turn, the secrets the town hides are enough to destroy them. It's up to the devils to find out what they are.

Gabrielle Rinaldi, the daughter of the local miller, was everything beautiful. Used to living life as a woman disrespected for her mind and her ideas, Gabby is drawn to the charming man. Jake falls hard and fast, but she's unwilling to hand her heart to a man she believes is a gunslinger.

When tragedy strikes, will Jake and Gabrielle find a way to save the town and their hearts?

HH: You specialize in historical, western romance. What sort of research have you done for your works?

BW: I do lots of research - everything from clothing to currency to what they ate. One of the constant things I have to check is language - like did you know "b*llshit" wasn't invented until the 20th century? Neither was a*shole. Two of my favorite curses - lol! (I heard one of them in 3:10 to Yuma and was disappointed).

I've got horses all around me (I live in horse country NC), plus I have a ton of books about horses, cowboys, old west, train robberies, stage coaches, and so on. It's really a constant thing when you write historical westerns.

HH: What do you enjoy about this particular genre?

BW: Life was simpler. You worked to survive, if you made money you kept it (no income taxes), the air was cleaner, and the rules were simple. Be honorable, respect women, and take pride in everything you do. I think of cowboys as modern day knights - they lived by a code of honor but were hard asses. =)

HH: What are you working on now?

BW: I'm working on two projects. The first is called Charley's Pride, it's a western (surprise!) about a woman detective in the 1870s Texas. She's hired to find a missing young woman in a small town and the sheriff has other ideas. He's determined to prove a woman cannot be a successful detective and find the young woman first. I love it when characters throw sparks off each other. =) This book is uncontracted at the moment, but I have high hopes for NY.

The second is a book called Hell for Leather and it features Kincaid, the dark-eyed gunslinger from The Tribute and The Gift. This book has a release date of June 2008 from Samhain. Here's the blurb:

Gunslinger Kincaid sheds his black clothes and pistols for a homespun shirt and trousers. He becomes Cade Brody, a man with dark hair, dark eyes and an even darker past. With the blood money he's earned, he buys a small piece of property in the New Mexico territory at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. There he buries his pistols at the base of a pine tree and mutters a eulogy for the man known as Kincaid.

Sabrina Edmonds, tough, non-nonsense woman runs the post office and store in the small town of Eustace. She's made her way in life by minding her business and making friends with only those she trusts. Sabrina doesn't ask Kincaid who that is-she respects a man's right to his past. However, she finds herself drawn to the dark stranger who hides in his mountain retreat.

A wild child, an even wilder town, and the demons from his past all threaten to bring down the life Kincaid tried to make from nothing. Will Kincaid run again or stand against the darkness he tried to leave behind?

HH: How did you get your start as a writer?

BW: My third grade teacher, Mrs. Freudenberg. =) She told me I wrote nice poetry.

Really though my romance novelist career began about twelve years ago when I decided to stop procrastinating and start writing. It took me eight years to write The Bounty, and another to get it published.

HH: How are things different now?

BW: How is it not different? LOL. Let's see, my kids are older and more independent so I have more time to write. I've got more than 17 novels/novellas/short stories published and I'm working my way up the ladder, slowly but surely, to be NY published. I really want to quit my full-time job and just be a novelist. It's what I love most in the world and to do it full-time would be a dream come true.

HH: goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career?

BW: Well, to be NY published for sure, and to repopulate the western romance genre, one hot sexy cowboy at a time. ;) I'm looking forward to expanding my reader base, to finding new and interesting stories to tell and growing as a writer. 2008 brings some new conferences (like Lori Foster's event and the Philadelphia Book Festival) and new challenges (my first print-run of a book, The Legacy). I plan on staying in the publishing world forever so I'm settling in for the long, wonderful journey.

HH: What can readers look forward to in the near future from you?

BW: November 6 marks the ebook release of Branded, with the print version of the Leather & Lace anthology coming next year around August. In November, Devils on Horseback: Nate comes out in print, on Christmas the print version of The Tribute is released. In 2008, March marks book two in the Devils on Horseback series with Jake's release in ebook, then in April the print release of The Legacy, the final and 7th book in the Malloy family series. Look for Hell for Leather in June in ebook - Kincaid's story, the dark-eyed gunslinger with a hefty past and a quick draw. After that, I wipe my brow and get some tea to start writing more. =)

HH: Thank you!
