Once the police received conservative photos of Lorena, they posted them along with Shaun’s, on trees, light poles, and at every city business–search party’s scoured abandoned houses. Everyone in the community wanted the kids safely returned. Even Vernon James paid the Police Department a second visit. “I want to volunteer for the search party.”
“Are you sure?” asked the chief. “Those kids have been missin’ for several days, now-and-.”
Vernon nodded. “I know–but I use ta’ work for a mortician. Drove the hearse to pick up the dead. See’n dead people don’t bother me.”
Staring, aghast at the not-so-grieving stepfather, the sheriff asked, “Had any more psychic dreams?”
“Yeah, I did. I been dreamin’ of tall trees and water. Lots of fast-movin’ water. Maybe you should search the river’n that cornfield?”
“Maybe we should,” the sheriff mused, watching Vernon leave.
