The 4H Club needed a teacher and the principal nominated her. Cassie couldn’t believe her misfortune. What in the world did a fourth grade teacher from the city of Portland, Maine know about farms? She’d moved to Brookings, SD in search of excitement and independence. The excitement, or lack there of, over her new role was enough to make her question her life choices. At least until she met the man she’d have to work with for the next few months.

She didn’t want to fall in love with him. They were too different. But the more she fought against her attraction to the dairy farmer’s charming Irish accent and mesmerizing green eyes, the deeper her feelings grew. If she didn’t know any better, she’d say the luck of the Irish was CLEARLY all on Mr. McDavitt’s side. His four-year-old son, Henry, was just as charming, if not more, than his father. She didn’t stand a chance. Cassie always dreamed of a large family of her own since she was a teen. Her maternal instincts grew stronger every time she looked at the little boy, sadly, Will McDavitt wasn’t the marrying kind. He wasn’t looking for a wife or a mother for his child. He’d made that point very clear.

She was in too much danger on the farm. Unfortunately, his young son was drawn to her. He’d discourage any friendship between the two. Life on the farm was hard enough lately, he didn’t need any distractions. He also didn’t need an unsuspecting teacher getting hurt.

The oil company after his land was ruthless. His livestock and several farm hands were on the receiving end of their underhanded tactics. At least the workers would recover, the cows and sheep would have to be replaced. The family farm was bleeding money like an open wound. He couldn’t live with himself if he lost the land his father and uncle founded when they came over to the United States from Ireland. They struggled to buy the land, founded the farm, and raised their families on this soil. It had to stay in the family. It was a symbol of the hard work and fortitude the McDavitt Clan had endured to survive. It was on Will’s shoulders to protect his family’s legacy. Pockets were being lined by the oil company’s blood money in an effort to gain the land. He’d find out who was responsible and prosecute them, if it was the last thing he ever did.
