“Five out of five stars. Great Read!! I really liked this book. This looks to be an intriguing new series that holds lots of promise. I loved Kaitlyn and Kane as characters. They gelled well together, and really worked good in this story!!! I loved the ghost story coming into this, and learning about the shadow walking ability. Really looking to getting more in depth with that in future books. Worth the read!! ” – Michelle S.
“Five out of five stars. Sucked me in and didn’t let go. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed it. Throughout the book we learn that Kate appears to be part of the paranormal world. Yet she doesn’t really understand what she is. The story line was good with plenty of angst but while we go through many emotions this author doesn’t take us down to the very bottom. Kate is slowly putting her life together and Kane is an important part. But it looks like we will continue to find out more about what this rock group is. I love that the author gives us enough to complete this story line but at the same time there are many more secrets that will be revealed with the following storylines. My curiosity will keep me coming back.” – Jori L. Kempe
He embraced me, turning me toward him against his chest, and stroked my hair. “I don’t know what it is about you, Katie, but you are not like other women.”
His heartbeat thudded against my cheek. His hard muscles rippled beneath me. I wanted to stroke his bare chest, and, dammit, I did.
He lifted me up and cradled me across his lap. I looked into his eyes, and eternity stretched before me—my past, present, and future reflected in those striking depths. An electric current sparked between us. I’d never felt anything like it.
“I’d like to kiss you if that’s okay.”
His smoldering gaze tore down my shield, and I slowly nodded, mesmerized and mystified by both my mounting desire and my uncanny sense of familiarity toward him. Kane grasped the back of my neck and kissed me, this time deep and slow, his tongue dancing with mine. It left me breathless.
My body writhed with a will of its own, betraying any doubts I had. Kane had awakened something in me, a passion that had been dead a long time. My mind screamed “no,” but tonight, my body controlled my emotions.
“Oh, Katie,” he murmured. “I…”
Something exploded. We both turned toward the sound as sparks from a log showered onto the stones in front of the fireplace. Then, the bed started shaking. I stared wide-eyed at Kane. His look mirrored mine.
“Earthquake?” we blurted at the same time.
That same eerie chill from earlier slithered over my shoulders. My breath and his came out in white puffs. This was no earthquake.

An Interview With Author Kelley Heckart by Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio
HH: Kelley, thank you for talking with us about your book Awakening, the first book in your new Shadow-Walkers series. First, what can you tell us about the series?
Kelley: Hi Holly, Thanks for the interview. My new Shadow-walkers series is inspired by my time as a rock and roll musician when I played in a couple of all-female bands. Of course, I added supernatural elements, so this is Rock Star meets Supernatural, and it’s very sexy, too. The twist is that the girls are the rock stars here, and they command the hunky supernatural guys in their lives. Also, after writing historical fantasy for many years, this is my first contemporary series.
HH: How does Awakening kick the series off?
Kelley: This series starts off with Kate, the bass player in the band, but she’s been fired from the band she co-founded and, after trying to put her life back in order, is looking for a new start as a romance writer. When her books are optioned for a movie series, she is trapped in a haunted cabin with the actor playing her hero. Kate wears the Journey rune that ties her to the spirit world, but she doesn’t know about her destiny until the passion between her and Kane ignites and awakens more than either of them expected.
HH: What do you like best about Kate and why will readers identify with her?
Kelley: I like that she’s a fighter. I think all of us have been in a downward spiral at some point in our lives and had to fight to pull everything back together.
HH: What do you like best about the hero and why will readers love him?
Kelley: Ha ha. He’s a hot Scottish movie star with some faery blood. Need I say more? Also, he helps Kate heal, and that’s a very appealing quality.
HH: What can you tell us about the rest of the series?
Kelley: All the books are standalone stories because each girl has her own story about how she comes into her Shadow-walker powers and meets her true mate. Each girl wears a unique rune tattoo, and each rune has different powers tied to it. Kate’s is Journey (Spirit World), Cyn’s is Wolfsangel (Werewolves), Jessie’s is Undead (Vampires and other undead creatures), Dina’s is Gateway (Otherworld beings), and Mickey’s is Opening (Shape-shifters). As the series progresses, readers also learn more about Shadow-walkers and the world the girls have stumbled into since they didn’t choose this. That’s another twist—no one trained them.
HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?
Kelley: More hot supernatural guys, romance, magic, and plots with twists. Each book is different. The next one is already available on Amazon—Awakening the Wolf, and it’s a paranormal werewolf romance with a murder mystery and some romantic suspense. The next one is Awakening the Vampire, another murder mystery with a surprise, then Awakening the Fae, a time-travel with Irish Fae. For those of you not familiar with faery lore, the Lord of the Rings grey elves were based on the Irish Fae. The fifth book is Awakening the Dragon, a romantic suspense featuring dragon shifters, and more stunning revelations are revealed about the girls’ Shadow-walker destinies.
HH: What’s your writing schedule like?
Kelley: I start working around eight in the morning, and I work until six or seven at night, with regular breaks. My dog reminds me to take breaks. Right now, I just finished revising Awakening the Vampire and sent that off to my editor. Now I am taking a couple of days to focus on marketing the new release and then I have to start revising Awakening the Fae. I’m doing writing-related stuff every day. To get and stay motivated, I need coffee and music.
HH: What goals have you set for yourself in 2019?
Kelley: I want to release the other books in my Shadow-walkers series. I had the first drafts already finished before I released the first book, so my plan is to release one every three or four months. Then, I plan to start writing either a spin-off to this series or something new. I’ve been wanting to try YA, and I have a first draft done of a paranormal story. I don’t think I can write something without paranormal elements.
HH: What are you reading now?
Kelley: I just finished A Cup of Blood, a Dark Age vampire tale with Arthurian elements. I liked it. It was interesting and surprised me.
HH: What are you most looking forward to in the year ahead?
Kelley: Staying healthy and being creative. There is also real music to go along with my Shadow-walkers series, written and recorded by myself and my musician husband. We bring in a professional singer to re-record my vocals. Also, we named the band after my fictional one—Hecate’s Fury, and we are on ReverbNation. This year, we plan on writing and recording more songs, so I’m excited about that. Our goal is to have enough songs for a CD. Other than that, I’m waiting impatiently for the final season of Game of Thrones. LOL
