Claire Davon and The Elementals’ Challenge series
Hi everyone, my name is Claire Davon and I am excited to be part of this spooky event. I look forward to interacting with each and every one of you in the next few days! If you’re not familiar with me, I write paranormal and contemporary romance as well as short stories in a whole bunch of genres. It isn’t unusual for me to be writing a psychological horror story at the same time I’m writing a paranormal fantasy romance. I love to mix it up. After all, aren’t some days horrible and some days magical?
The truth is that I’ve always been a writer. From when I was very young I had ideas running through my head—elaborate fantasies that I would spin out over days, sometimes weeks at a time. It was more interesting than what was going on around me, that was for sure!
In addition to being a writer, I’ve always been a reader. As a child I would walk to school with my nose stuck in a book, oblivious to the world around me. These days I suppose it would be a Kindle, although I did like the feel of the book in my hands. Then again with a Kindle I never run out of reading material, which was always a problem as a kid. I haunted used book stores. There was never enough books for me.
That lifelong love of reading has translated into today. I love to read but also I love to write the stories that I want to read. Sometimes when I was younger I would rewrite the stories in my head the way I wanted them to end, or with the character I wanted to be (early daydreaming fan fiction, I suppose). That was how I started, with TV show fan fic to writing with friends to the world-building and new characters that I create in modern day. But it all started with a book.
Living in Los Angeles also gives me a unique perspective, although few of my books are centered around Hollywood. If they are, they are more from the everyday person’s point of view instead of celebrities. That’s the truth about Hollywood, or even Beverly Hills, which is the city I work in. Even one block off Rodeo Drive people are going about their daily business of earning a living and trying to get by. That doesn’t mean that we don’t have our celebrity sightings and I would be lying if I said it wasn’t exciting. From Kim Kardashian to Kelsey Grammar to Stan Lee it is not unusual to see any manner of celebrities going about their daily business just like we are (except we don’t get stopped at Nate N’ Al’s for autographs). That would be weird, or a case of mistaken identity. That happens to me sometimes—you can tell the look. People look at you as if to say “shouldn’t I know you?” and the answer is (in my head) “well, maybe, but not for the reasons you think.” Sometimes it will be the reverse. You’ll see someone that is familiar and raise your hand to say hi, thinking they are a friend from school, or a former work mate, only to realize that no, they played the villainess on your favorite soap opera, or were on a TV show you watched. It’s funny that way. And when I look out of my office window, I find myself coming up with different ideas for new stories.
My Elementals’ series is one of those ah-hah moments that happen to me sometimes (not as often as I like but that’s another story). The series likely came in part from all of the fantasy books I read when I was younger as well as the paranormal series I was reading at the time. Then it morphed over time to become what it is today. It started ten years ago when I had this idea about four immortal (but not invulnerable) beings charged with periodically trying to save the world – and the punishment to mankind if they fail.
The Elementals’ Challenge series is one I’m passionate about. Fire Danger is the first in the series, followed by Air Attack, which releases November 7th, and Water Fall will be out in a couple of months. I hope you’ll check them out.
Happy Reading, Claire
