Excerpt from Under the Crescent Moon – one of the many books available in this set:
“I’ve never felt like I’ve fit in anywhere.” Irene’s jaw was so tense, Luke marveled she could get the words out. “I’ve always thought it was a combination of being adopted and my bad temper, but you’d say it was because I was Pack, wouldn’t you?”
“Yes.”
She gripped the railing tightly with both hands, knuckles white. Shadows claimed her face, obscuring it, and Luke longed to pull the comb and pins from her hair so it would fall down around her shoulders and he could bury his face in it.
“I wish I could believe you,” she whispered, bowing her head.
Luke used one finger to gently push her chin up. She turned her head to look at him, her eyes so deep he wanted to submerge himself in them. Drown.
“You’re not alone,” he said, and her mouth trembled.
He leaned forward, so his lips brushed hers. The shock of her mouth against his ripped his breath away. What he’d meant to be a light, comforting caress turned wild in a heartbeat.
She parted her lips and he was lost, crushing her against him. He ran one hand down the sweet curve of her hip and the other across her bare shoulder.
Cupping his face with both her hands, she went up on tiptoe so she could explore his mouth with her tongue. She tasted of whiskey and sunshine. Her thundery, spring scent enveloped him, and he drank it in eagerly.
Irene. Her name danced in his head, making him want to shout it aloud, only he was too busy devouring her with his mouth.
Her heart pounded against his chest. She molded herself to him as if trying to sink beneath his flesh, and she felt so right against his body he could barely breathe.
Blood slammed to his cheeks, flaming his face, threatening to immolate him and take her with the conflagration.
She moaned against his mouth,. Her fingers were cool against his hot skin. She stroked his cheek, explored his jawline, and drifted her hand up to his hair, massaging his scalp until it was all he could do to not throw her down on the deck and take her right there.
“Luke.” She breathed his name as if she were really seeing him for the first time. He knew he mostly infuriated her – especially because he intrigued her – but the way she spoke his name now sent a bolt of passion tingling through his veins. She wanted him as much as he wanted her.
He smiled against her lips, and when she drew away, breaking their kiss, he resisted the urge to growl and snatch her back.
Instead he let his arms drop to his sides, allowing her to step away and put space between them.
Her face flamed. Lips swollen by kisses parted but she said nothing for a moment.
“I’m going to get another drink,” she said at last, and he felt the wall build between them as she desperately tried to distance herself from him. Her eyes had a wild sheen, and he knew if he reached out, she’d come back to his arms. Only he wanted her to come of her own accord, so he did nothing.
