Sometimes I struggle to figure out exactly where to begin a story, but that wasn’t the case with this book. The opening scene popped into my head with amazing clarity. The heroine, Juni Voss, has just moved into her new home, an A-frame cabin surrounded by towering Douglas firs off a private road on the western slopes of the Cascades in Washington State. A graphic artist, she has decided to seek inspiration by taking her sketch book through the woods to sit by a nearby river. On her way, she encounters her neighbor for the first time. While she figured they’d cross paths at some point, she never expected to find him up a tree in his firefighter’s gear trying to capture a kitten. The scene
practically wrote itself, and it still makes me smile.
