The Strand Bookstore Expands to Lincoln Center, Preserving Shakespeare & Co.'s Legacy
In a significant development for New York City’s literary community, The Strand Bookstore is set to take over the lease of the Shakespeare & Co. location at 2020 Broadway, between 69th and 70th Streets, effective June 1. The store is expected to reopen in early July as The Strand at Lincoln Center, marking the Strand’s second location on the Upper West Side.
Shakespeare & Co., a cherished independent bookstore since the 1980s, had previously closed its other New York City locations due to rising costs and rent pressures. The Lincoln Square store was its last remaining outpost.
Nancy Bass Wyden, owner of The Strand, expressed her commitment to honoring the legacy of Shakespeare & Co., stating, “Shakespeare & Co. has been an invaluable and treasured resource on the West Side since the 1980s… The Strand Book Store aims to honor and continue this legacy as we expand our presence on the Upper West Side with the addition of this new store.”
In a move that underscores The Strand’s dedication to community and continuity, all current Shakespeare & Co. booksellers and baristas will retain their employment under the new management.
The new 2,500-square-foot Strand location will continue to offer a curated selection of new, used, and rare books, along with the beloved café space. Patrons can also look forward to The Strand’s signature programs, including “Blind Date with a Book,” Studio Strand merchandise, and a robust lineup of events for readers of all ages.
This expansion not only preserves a literary landmark but also reinforces The Strand’s role as a stalwart of New York City’s independent bookstore scene.
